In 2020, Virginia passed a new law that makes living shorelines the preferred way to protect waterfront property from erosion. The Virginia Pilot covered the success of the newly restored shoreline taking shape after Norfolk Southern in summer 2020 built a 900’ living shoreline to protect its coal loading terminal on the Elizabeth River.
